The Santa Elena Peninsula of Costa Rice represents an Aptian to Middle Eocene intraoceanic volcanic arc formed on a basement of serpentinized periodotite. This peridotite was probably part of the oceanic lithosphere formed at a spreading ridge which began to separate South America from North America in pre-Jurassic time.

The resources include petroleum, found chiefly in stratigraphic traps in Paleocene-Eocene formations of the Santa Elena peninsula, coal (lignitic and subbituminous), gold-bearing quartz veins and placers, silver, copper, manganese, and various nonmetals.
